Some dogs suffer from
chronic ear infections. They keep shaking
their head and scratching their ears
despite many treatments by vets and
groomers. The ear discharge becomes much
smelly. Vets will usually prescribe
antibiotics and ear drops but the ear
problem is not resolved and time passes
by.
Over the years, the ears get blackened and
hardened. Is there a solution to this
problem? Yes. There is a surgical solution
which is effective in most cases of
chronic otitis externa. It is called
lateral ear canal resection.
This surgery involves cutting out the side
wall of the vertical ear canal. This
removal of the side wall opens up the ear
canal so that there is ventilation and
discharge. The dog feels better and stops
scratching.
As in all surgeries, this ear surgery may
have complications of stitch breakdown as
the ear canals have been badly infected in
the first place. I had to re-stitch again
and ward the poodle till it recovered.
Below is an example of how a recent
lateral ear resection surgery was done by
me. No more smelly ears since the surgery
done over one month ago.

Lateral ear canal resection
surgery gives the best
outcome when the ear canals
are not infected. In this
case, the 6-year-old poodle
had been having ear
infections for the past 5
years. Now, there is no more
ear pain and head shaking
nowadays.
