INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE STORIES

"This
puppy was born on the first anniversary of my son's death," the fortyish
mother's eyes were bright and she was cheerful. "He was only
eighteen years old when he jumped down from the apartment one year ago."
I did not know what to say. Deaths of young sons are sad events. Why would
a young man want to commit suicide? Was it the stress of National Service
Full time? Some 30 years ago, I saw a young man in National Service Full
Time dead at the block of the 4-storey military barracks. I was doing
National Service after graduation as a veterinarian in 1974 and this first
3 months was basic military training. The young man got up at 5.30 am and
jumped down from the corner of the 4th storey and was dead. I did not know
why he chose to commit suicide as he was in another platoon.
Now, some 3 decades later, I was shocked to hear about my client's son
killing himself. The woman had bought a puppy from Mr Tan, a home-breeder
on my recommendations. Mr Tan had a litter of Shih Tzu X Cocker Spaniel
puppies.
"What happened?" I asked. "I did not read about his death in The Straits
Times."
"The Chinese newspapers had the story," the mother told me.
"Why did he not let you know he wanted to stop living?" I asked the
mother.
"He did tell his friends that they would go to his home as a group soon."
"Did the friends tell you?" I was surprised that nobody informed the
parents.
"No," the mother said. "They told me after his death."
I would have thought it was the adjustment and the stress of going into
National Service. But I was mistaken.
The mother elaborated, "The English girl did not want to be his girlfriend
anymore. That was why he commit suicide."
What is so incredible about this story? Well, I met Mr Tan after 10
years. He had found an abandoned female English Cocker Spaniel and
consulted me. He was previously the boss of a garment factory across my
Surgery in the Toa Payoh Industrial Park. But he had closed shop some 10
years ago and we did not meet anymore. After examining the female dog, I
discovered she was on heat. Mr Tan bred her. As no male Cocker Spaniels
were available, a male Shih Tzu was her mate.
I got a phone call from the woman who wanted to know if I had puppies for
sale. That was how I referred her to Mr Tan. She brought the puppy in for
vaccination and revealed that the birth date of this puppy was the first
anniversary of her son's death.
"Do you believe in reincarnation?" I asked the woman.
"I had a dream about this mystic woman before the purchase of this puppy,"
the mother said. She mentioned a name but I did not know about this lady.
"I do know of Syed Baba" I said. "She is equivalent to Syed Baba," she
said.
This must be an incredible story. An abandoned dog was found by a man whom
I had not seen for at least a decade. The dog was bred. The puppies were
born on the anniversary of a son's death. A phone call to me to enquire
where to buy a puppy. A puppy bought on the anniversary of a son's death.
She came to me for the vaccination as advised by the Seller who was also
present at the same time with other puppies. Too much of a
coincidence? The only good news is that the mother has recovered
from her sorrow and if you believe in reincarnation, the puppy is the son
now.
Unrequited love can be quite depressing
for a young adult. Is there a way to resolve the unrequited love other
than committing suicide? Communications and daily hugs when the child is
very young from both parents may have prevented such suicides, in my
opinion. It is easier said than done. When these are not done, the child
starts rebelling as an adolescent and keeps his or her worries from the
parents.
